Is social networking of value ?
Well consider this:
1) The average person reads 6 blogs per day….
2) Twitter doubles in size every 90 days…
3) Facebook has 250 million active users….
4) Youtube has 75 million video views every month….
5) Here is the big one..people between the ages of 18-34 spend 40% of their online time on…Social Media sites!
I know these facts are hard to comprehend…let me put all of this into perspective…
More people are using the top 4 social media sites than are watching…ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox News COMBINED.

Great points. The social networking sites are huge now and will be even more important in the future.
I think if a blogger starts with minimal expectations and thinks of a long, slow build to creating an enhanced reputation, then social media is easily "worth it". It should be thought of extending your presence, but not a substitute for other marketing activities. Right now, FB is like wearing your name badge in the grocery store. It's position in the marketing mix is still "TBD".
Social networking is the future now. In 2009, I had several substantial transactions from my participation on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. Ditto for 2010. There is nothing new about social networking, it is just different. Social media is all about relationships and not leads. The key is relationships are made, enhanced and extended online by engagement and participation. If you participate in an authentic way and give back then people of like minds will follow and eventually new relationships will development. If you push real estate on social networks, all you are doing is marketing.

You are right on point.
